Beginner’s Guide to Pilates: What to Expect

If you’re Pilates-curious, welcome. At Reform & Ride, we believe starting Pilates shouldn’t feel scary or intimidating. Yes, the equipment looks fancy. Yes, your core will discover muscles it didn’t know it had. But no, you don’t need to be flexible, coordinated, or fluent in Pilates-speak to begin. Here’s your friendly, practical guide to stepping into your first class with confidence.

What Is Pilates, Really?

Pilates is a full-body, low-impact workout designed to build strength, balance, and body awareness. It focuses on controlled movement and breath.

Pilates was developed in the early 20th century by German physical trainer Joseph Pilates, after whom it was named. (Joseph Pilates originally called his method “Contrology”). Classical Pilates uses a combination of around 50 repetitive exercises to achieve muscle exertion.

At Reform & Ride, we blend classical roots with contemporary flair, giving you a workout that’s smart, safe, and impressively addictive.

Meet the Equipment: Your New Best Friends

1. The Reformer
This is the star of the show—the long, sleek machine with springs, straps, and a moving carriage. The Reformer helps you train with resistance and support, making it incredibly effective (and surprisingly fun). Expect planks, presses, lunges, and lengthening moves that leave you feeling taller and stronger.

2. The Chair
Don’t let the name fool you; this is not for sitting politely. The Pilates Chair is compact and deceptively challenging. It builds power in your arms, legs, and core, and it’s a favorite for athletes who love a good “wow, that’s harder than it looks” moment.

3. The Cadillac

This apparatus has a raised table, overhead bars, trapeze, and springs. It offers maximum support and three-dimensional movement.

4. The Tower
Here’s where we play vertically. Using springs attached to a wall or frame, you’ll work on stability, posture, and control. New to Pilates? This equipment supports your alignment beautifully.

Note: The Tower is often paired with either the Reformer or the Cadillac, adding extra versatility and accessibility. Plus, it saves space!

5. Mat Pilates
Sometimes simplicity is the ultimate challenge. Mat work teaches fundamentals and deep core engagement. In our studio, it’s often blended with equipment for a well-rounded experience.

Don’t confuse a Pilates Mat with a yoga mat! Pilates Mats are thicker and denser, making them easier on your joints.
